History

The Historic Shaniko Hotel, located in Shaniko, Oregon, was built by the Columbia Southern Railway in 1900–1902 at the southern terminus of its line. It was the hub and focal point of the community life during the heyday of the local wool industry in the early 20th century. In addition to lodging, it served as saloon, bank, stagecoach stop, dance hall, and general gathering place.

Welcome to Shaniko

Travel Oregon names Shaniko, Oregon a ‘don’t miss’ destination on the Journey Through Time Scenic Byway, adding:

“Among the haunted remnants of what was once the “Wool Capital of the World” are the weathered structures of a historic hotel, a jail and a schoolhouse. Remaining residents are surprisingly spirited, putting on several annual events, including a vintage music festival, a bluegrass jamboree and historic Shaniko Days.”

We look forward to your stay!
